PROJECT SUMMARY
These two beautiful Bellevue Hill properties shared a steep easement driveway winding upward toward their homes. One residence had already undergone an impressive renovation, leaving the rear property in need of a major remodel to match its neighbour. The owners engaged Build Ability — renowned for their professionalism & quality — to work alongside their architect and bring their vision for a luxury home to life.
One of the biggest design obstacles? Giving the property the entrance it truly deserved.
The shared concrete driveway had endured years of extensions, trenching, underground service installations & patchwork repairs. What remained was a surface that was mismatched, inconsistent, and in places severely deteriorated — falling well short of the calibre of the homes it served.
Yet being on a hillside supported by structural retaining walls meant that any major excavation & re-concreting came with significant structural challenges, high costs, and an additional problem: The newly completed front home would completely lose access. Not ideal for a family already settled into their finished build.
The architect sought a solution with a wow factor, durability, and the ability to elevate the entrance without lengthy, invasive works. Something that could transform the driveway into a Premium design feature rather than a compromise.
This case study explores how StoneSet Premium UVR delivered all of that — and more — overcoming each challenge with ease and creating a seamless, long-lasting surface worthy of two exceptional homes.
ACCESS MANAGEMENT
Minimising disruption was a key priority. To maintain access for the residents of the existing home, the StoneSet surface was installed in carefully planned sections. Thanks to StoneSet’s efficient installation process, the consistency of our Premium UVR lay, and the ability to utilise the numerous existing expansion joints to our advantage, vehicular access was limited to just five days — and foot access was never lost.
This strategic, staged approach ensured the project could progress smoothly without compromising the daily lives of the homeowners
JOINT REFLECTION
Concrete expansion joints — especially where slabs have been poured at different times — can be visually disruptive and difficult to disguise. With StoneSet, these joints become far easier to manage. We install aluminium angle set flush with the finished StoneSet surface, positioned back-to-back with only a minimal separation. This gap is then filled with either StoneSet itself or, as in this project, a Sikaflex flexible sealant.
This approach maintains clean visual lines while still allowing each concrete slab to move independently beneath the surface. The result is a seamless, Premium finish that protects against movement-related cracking without compromising aesthetics.
SERVICE ACCESS POINTS
Like many driveways, this one included multiple inspection plates. When you’re overlaying 245m² of old, mis-matched concrete, small details like these can easily become visual eyesores. Instead of grinding around each plate and tying in — which would only introduce more height changes and inconsistent transitions — we opted for a far cleaner solution.
We installed invisible access covers and filled them with the same StoneSet blend, creating a seamless, uninterrupted finish. The service points remain fully accessible via a key, while the overall presentation stays flawless.
It’s these small but important details that elevate a project from functional to exceptional.
RESULTS OVERVIEW
Once completed, the StoneSet surface delivered an exceptional outcome for both properties:
- A high SRI value, thanks to the light, earthy stone blend — reducing heat absorption & enhancing comfort.
- A seamless, consistent finish across the entire 245m², transforming previously mis-matched concrete into a unified architectural feature.
- Significant cost savings, avoiding tens of thousands of dollars in excavation, demolition, and potential structural damage.
- A certified P5 slip rating, ensuring safety on a steep driveway while maintaining Premium aesthetics.
- A flexible, movement-tolerant wearing course capable of absorbing minor substrate movement that concrete simply cannot without cracking.
- A permeable wearing layer, eliminating moisture-related delamination risks and supporting long-term performance.
- Enhanced kerb appeal & increased property value, aligning the driveway with the calibre of both renovated homes.
- And most importantly — an architect who loved it, a builder who trusted it, and two homeowners who couldn’t be happier.
