When the owner of this heritage-listed cottage set out to upgrade their aging driveway—likely untouched since the 1970s—they needed a solution that would be durable, aesthetically pleasing and could be completed without extensive disruption. With the driveway being the only access point to the property, prolonged excavation or concrete works were not an option.
StoneSet’s versatile hand-laid system, mixed on-site and applied directly over existing hard surfaces, meant the client could repurpose the original pavers without removing them. Total access time lost? Just 36 hours.
While StoneSet requires a relatively stable substrate, this driveway was a perfect candidate. A few loose pavers were identified, however the whole surface was secured using a fibreglass mesh layer, which also acted as a partial separation barrier between the flexible StoneSet topping and the old surface below—helping to isolate minor movement and avoid reflective cracking over time.
The result is a seamless, natural stone surface with no visible paver joints, and significantly improved functionality. StoneSet’s hand-trowelled application naturally eliminates small undulations and trip hazards, offering a level, slip-resistant finish that follows the existing contour while smoothing out minor imperfections.
Most importantly, the environmental and financial cost of full excavation was avoided entirely. The original pavers, once dated and uneven, are now providing a stable base beneath a high-performing surface designed to last 25+ years.
This project showcases StoneSet’s unmatched ability to transform existing surfaces—especially those with heritage value—into modern, resilient, and sustainable driveways with minimal preparation and maximum impact.
