Project summary

Muskoka doesn’t forgive weak materials. It’s a region carved by glaciers, gripped by granite, and tested every year by a freeze-thaw cycle that can crack concrete, heave pavers & turn a beautiful driveway into a maintenance headache within a handful of winters.

So when the owners of a private lakeside estate in the heart of Ontario’s cottage country set out to replace a tired driveway serving their home, tennis court & gardens, they needed more than a nice-looking surface – they needed a system engineered for the climate it was going into, installed by a crew that actually understood that climate.

To stand up to a Muskoka winter, the homeowners needed a driveway that would:

  • withstand repeated freeze-thaw cycles without cracking, heaving or spalling,
  • drain fast enough to prevent the sheet ice that makes driveways treacherous underfoot & under tyre,
  • complement the granite outcrops, cedar & pine of the surrounding Muskoka landscape, and
  • be installed to a tight schedule without compromising on quality.

That’s exactly why StoneSet’s Canadian distributor & installation partner, Dream Pave, was engaged for the job. Dream Pave has spent years building the deepest bench of resin bound paving expertise in Ontario – engineering full permeable systems from the base up, purpose-built to handle everything a Canadian winter can throw at them.

Working over a compacted 20mm Clear Stone drainage aggregate base, chosen specifically for its ability to store & move water freely beneath the surface, the Dream Pave team installed an 18mm StoneSet resin bound wearing course across the full 700m² driveway footprint in just 4 working days.

The finished wearing course carries roughly 13% interconnected void space with a drainage flow rate of 60 litres per m² per second, so water passes straight through the surface & into the drainage base below rather than pooling & freezing. Because there’s no film of surface water left to freeze, the driveway is far less prone to black ice after a freeze & thaws out dramatically faster once temperatures lift – enough, for a lot of homeowners, to cut back significantly on de-icing salt & mechanical ploughing. The aggregate blend selected for the project was 100% natural Canadian granite, locally sourced & crushed to size, chosen to echo the tones of the surrounding rock & timber. Unlike exposed aggregate concrete, StoneSet contains no cement matrix between the stones, so the finished surface reads as genuinely stone-full rather than sharing the stage with a grey cementitious background.

In the end, the result is a fully bound, fully permeable driveway that ties the lakeside home, tennis court & gardens together within Muskoka’s granite & pine landscape – backed by Dream Pave’s 5-Year Limited Warranty, with the StoneSet system itself carrying a 30+ Year Expected Lifespan once Canada’s freeze-thaw cycles are factored into the equation.

Technical information & environmental statistics

Measureable Performance
Permeability – StoneSet resin bound system 60L per m2 per second
Void content Approximately 13% interconnected void space, reducing surface ponding & minimising ice-sheet formation
Slip resistance P5 (V) wet pendulum rating, exceeding the minimum industry benchmark of 54
Toxic impact of material StoneSet products contain no PFAS or organofluorine compounds, based on raw material declarations and supplier data. StoneSet’s UVR resin is a two-part system made from a plant oil-based resin and HDI oligomer hardener, which cures to form an inert polyurethane. Any unreacted HDI rapidly reacts with moisture to form a non-reactive substance, meaning no active chemicals are leached during application, curing, or in-service use. The final product is non-toxic, non-leaching, and poses no risk of bioaccumulation or bioconcentration in the environment. A primary component of the two component binder is a crop oil making up 37% of the formulation.
Design life Backed by Dream Pave’s 5-Year Limited Warranty, with a 30+ Year Expected Lifespan for the StoneSet system once Canada’s freeze-thaw cycles are factored into the equation.
